Frequently Asked Questions

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR ACCOMODATIONS?
Our lodge is newly constructed in 2016.  It has 6 bedrooms, 4.5 baths, a full kitchen, large utility room with washer/dryer, on demand hot water & plenty of space inside and out to comfortably house 12 to 14 hunters.

WILL I BE HUNTING WITH OTHER GROUPS?
We do not combine groups.  When you hunt with us, you are exclusive to the lodge and our property.  We only take a handful of hunts each year to maintain the quality of each outing.

HOW DO WE GET TO THE FIELDS FOR THE HUNT?
You will be transported to and from the field in our customized 4 wheel drive bus.  The bus is equipped with a gun rack to safely transport your guns, tables for eating or other tasks, plenty of cubbys to store ammunition and hooks for spare clothing.  I don't know how we ever did it without the bus!

DO YOUR GUIDES CARRY A GUN?
No, our guides are managing their dogs and the hunt.  Their job is to put birds in the air, recover them after they are shot and to ensure that the hunt is conducted ethically and safely.

DO I NEED A HUNTER'S SAFETY CARD TO PURCHASE A LICENSE?
Not unless you are under the age of 16. Then, you need a previous license from the state of South Dakota or a hunter's safety card and a parent or guardian must sign the license.

WHAT AMMUNITION CAN I SHOOT?
You must shoot 4, 5 or 6 shot. In a 12 gauge, we recommend 2 3/4", 1 1/4 oz. of shot and 3 3/4 drams minimum powder charge. Three inch magnums are not recommended for a 12 gauge as they are much slower. In a 20 gauge, a 3" magnum is recommended.

DO I HAVE TO SHOOT STEEL?
No. You can shoot lead as well.

DO I NEED BLAZE ORANGE CLOTHING?
State law does not require it, but we prefer that you wear standard hunting gear with some blaze orange details. Shooting glasses are also highly recommended.

WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF THE SEASON FOR HUNTING?
The hunting at Hetland’s Hunting Haven is always action-packed and we manage our habitat to ensure good hunting all season. Pheasant season in South Dakota is from the 3rd Saturday in October thru the 1st Sunday in January.

WHAT TYPE OF GUNS DO YOU RECOMMEND?
We recommend 12 and 20 gauge guns. Double barrels are acceptable but quick multiple shot opportunities can be missed.

WHAT TYPE OF COVER DO YOU HUNT?
Hunts will be a mixture of cropland, grassland and trees.

DO YOU HUNT PRIVATE OR PUBLIC LAND?
We hunt on our own private land, which has been groomed over the years to support multiple hunters with a great hunt and plenty of memories. Our Photo Gallery will give you a good idea of the ground you'll cover when you hunt at Hetland's.

HOW DO WE GET OUR GAME HOME?
Bring a cooler along and we will help you pack it right or it can be shipped overnight for an extra fee.

WHAT IF I DON’T SEE A PACKAGE THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT MY GROUP WANTS?
No problem. Simply contact us and we will customize a package for you based on availability.

HOW DO I GET TO HETLAND’S HUNTING HAVEN?
We are located approximately 85 miles west of Sioux Falls or 20 miles northwest of Mitchell, just a few miles from I-90. Take Exit 319 (coming from east or west) and proceed north 1 mile to red flashing 4-way stop. Continue north for another 8 miles to 245th Street and turn right, after 1 mile turn left onto 398th Avenue and Hetland’s Hunting Haven is 1/4 mile north on the west (left) side of the road.

CAN I BRING MY DOG?
Dogs are welcome, however they must be able to stay in range of the group during the hunt.

DO YOU CLEAN AND DRESS MY PHEASANTS FOR ME?
Yes we do. Our professional staff will clean, dress and package your pheasants as part of your standard hunting package.

“At least ten years of hunting at Hetland’s Hunting Lodge, mostly with the same group of hunters; testimonial in and of its self!!! Dedicated to providing pheasant habitat! Look forward to returning again this year and hopefully for many more!”
